Oceanic

IMG_2186.JPGIf you have been following my blog for a while, you know that I love to wear things that are a little out of the ordinary. That is why I love this “under-the-sea” printed dress. It has a classic shape, but a very interesting print. From far away, you can’t really tell what is going on on the bottom of the dress, but as you get closer, you can see that it is the bottom of the ocean. It is a bit avant garde, but that’s just the way I like it! I wore it with a layered pearl necklace (also seen here) and white pumps for a really feminine look. P.S White pumps are a must this season, and I love these by Enzo.

Poached Pears w/ Mascarpone filling

IMG_2634.JPGI am not much of a dessert gal; I prefer savory any day. However, I love poached pears. Depending on how you poach them, they can have just the right amount of sweetness to finish off a great meal. If you really want to impress your dinner guest, this is the dessert to make. It is really easy, and looks so chic! Here’s how to make them.

Ingredients: (serves 4)

  • 4 pears (I used bosc pears)
  • 1 bottle of Cabernet sauvignon – you can use any red you like
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 lemon sliced thinly
  • 8 oz. mascarpone cheese
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar

First, you need to peel, half, and core your pears. I kept the stems on for presentation.I used a melon baller to remove the core and make a nice nest for the mascarpone filling.

IMG_2623.JPG

Next, combine the red wine, water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, and a few slices of lemon to a large pot, and bring to a boil.

IMG_2608.JPG

While the poaching liquid is coming to a boil, you can make your mascarpone filling. Simply combine the mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract and whip until smooth.

IMG_2631.JPG

Once the liquid is boiling, add the pears, making sure they are not overlapped. You want them all to poach evenly.

IMG_2629.JPG

Bring the liquid to a simmer, and cook the pears until they are fork tender. You may need to flip them carefully during the cooking process. My pears were very ripe so it only took about 15 minutes.

Red wine reduction sauce: After you remove the pears and set aside to cool a bit, bring the remaining liquid to a boil until it reduces to a syrup consistency.

Presentation: Add a spoonful of the mascarpone filling to each pear, and then drizzle the red wine reduction over the tops.

Enjoy! These are seriously delicious! Let me know how it turns out. You can also pin this recipe by using my “Pin It” button below the picture.

Indigo

IMG_2409.JPG

I hope you had a fun and relaxing Sunday/ Mother’s Day. Today’s outfit was so much fun to put together and to wear. I have had this tribal print shirt from Zara for a while, but I wanted to wait for the perfect pair of jeans to wear with it. I found these indigo colored skinny jeans by Current/ Elliott on sale, and I loved how it looked with the shirt. I added a peach blazer (also seen here), and accessorized with my House of Harlow sunburst pendant and Rebecca Minkoff mini MAC bag. What do you think? Do you love colored skinny jeans?

Peach and Pearls

IMG_2010.JPG

One of my favorite pieces for Spring (or for any season for that matter) is a nicely fitted tweed blazer. It is such classic style, and it can make any outfit instantly more sophisticated.  I love this peach blazer, because it is light enough for Spring, it has a cool frayed look, and it has a slight peplum at the back. I paired it with a white vintage tee, boyfriend jeans, and my new white t-strap sandals. It’s a casual, coco-inspired look!

IMG_1972.jpgIMG_2028.jpg

I accessorized with my new favorite necklace from Stella and Dot. The layers of pearls looked perfect with the peach blazer. What do you think?

Resort wear

IMG_1772.jpg

Summer is almost here (and it certainly feels like it in Houston), and that means its vacation time. We are planning a trip to Italy, and trying to pack light while still looking your best can be a challenge. I always try to take clothes that are inexpensive (so I don’t have to worry about them), and easy to wear and pack. I love this cobalt blue color-blocked maxi dress because it can be dressed up or down, and it is so on trend right now.

IMG_1916.jpgI accessorized with a fuchsia floppy hat which is perfect for vacationing (it doesn’t lose its shape!)

For this look, I dressed it up, but this dress would also look great with sandals for a more casual, comfortable look.  What do you think? How do you like to dress on vacation?

Derby Fashion: All about the Hats

Today I had so much fun hosting a fashion segment on Great Day Houston with the always lovely and energetic Deborah Duncan. Since the famous Kentucky Derby is just around the corner, we were talking about Derby fashions which are never without an amazing hat. I was wearing a fascinator, which is similar to the style of hat Kate Middleton likes to wear, and my models were wearing bigger, more extavagant pieces. I wanted to show you what a television set looks like behind the scenes, so here are some pics from the day. I hope you enjoy!

The ladies and I before going on set. I was wearing a white dress from Banana Republic and belt from BCBG.

About to go on and the nerves started kicking in when I saw all the lights and cameras.

Powerful Paisley

IMG_1655.jpg

One print that I am really inspired by right now is paisley. I wanted to create a wearable outfit inspired by the head-to-toe paisley looks from Stella McCartney’s Spring 2012 runway collection. Wearing paisley on paisley is a bold look, but it can look very chic. I wore a paisley print top with matching shorts from the Gap, with my Zara color blocked heels. I changed the accessories for two different looks.

Here is the first look. I wore a chunky gold chain necklace for a more simple and sophisticated look.

And the second. I added a mint blazer and a mint beaded necklace for a more colorful, fun look.

Classic Denim Jacket

IMG_1366.JPG

One of my favorite layering pieces for Spring and Summer is a classic denim jacket. I had been looking for the right color and fit for a while, but I finally found one a couple of months ago. It can really bring the whole outfit together. Yesterday, on my way to my aunt and uncles’s house we managed to snap a few pictures before I got eaten alive by mosquitos! For this look,  I wore a bright yellow sleeveless top with a coral pencil skirt, and added the denim jacket as a finishing touch.

What do you think of my new Karen Walker sunnies? I love them in tortoise shell.

Street photos w/ Cody Bess

IMG_9200.jpg

One of the things I love most about blogging is the photography part of it. So when the amazingly talented Cody Bess contacted me to work with him on an upcoming project, I was more than thrilled. His photography is so imaginative and alluring, which is why I am a big fan. Check out some of his work here. I will tell you more about our project as it unfolds, but it the meantime, here is a quick street style shoot he did of me. My style is not normally THIS over the top, but it had to be for the street we were shooting on! (Montrose in Houston)

Do you recognize this food truck anyone? The food is great, but it also served as a great backdrop. Thanks Eatsie Boys!
